Description:
Medium sized wagtail, with varied plumages, but mostly black and white. Extremely variable, with black-and-white head pattern, grey or black mantle, and largely white to largely black wing-coverts. Head pattern, and grey or black mantle, indicate racial identification of breeding males.
Distribution:
Common passage migrant all accros Gilgit-Baltistan, with some birds spending summer in higher valleys. Breeds by running waters in open country in hills and mountains. On migration and winters near water in open country, fields and villages.
Behavior:
Forages while walking, picks at items on the ground or darts forwards to snatch prey; jumps up to take insects in the air. Sometimes wades in shallow water, picking invertebrates from the surface, or hovers to snatch prey. Food includes wide range of small terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates.
